SURVIVING OPRESSION
During and after slavery, Black people often had to conceal their natural hair to conform to white standards of appearance and secure employment. Wigs became a tool for navigating racist societal norms.
Combating stigmas:
While the modern "natural hair movement" has embraced Afro-textured hair, remnants of the stigma persist. Some Black women may wear wigs to avoid negative perceptions of their natural hair in professional or social settings.
